Researchers have developed a bio-chip test that will drastically reduce the time and cost of Alzheimer’s diagnostic testing. The current tests for Alzheimer’s disease rely on DNA testing which is costly and takes several days. These DNA tests determine the presence of certain mutant genes that increase a person’s risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. This new bio-chip test essentially acts as a “lab on a chip” to analyse a blood sample for these mutant genes.

How This Biochip Blood Test Changes The Way The Alzheimer’s Disease Is Tested

  • The most common Alzheimer gene test is for the APOE4 genetic mutation as people with this mutation are 12 times more likely to develop dementia in their lifespan. These tests are lengthy and a person can expect to wait for several days or even weeks for their test results. However, the Alzheimer’s biochip blood test delivers results in just 3 hours.
  • There are few genetic testing companies that provide services directly to consumers and the price of these tests are generally in the range of 100-200 USD. On the other hand, Randox, the biotech company that created this test for Alzheimer’s said their biochip blood would cost just about 30 USD.
  • The test is 100 % accurate which means that there is no chance of a false positive or a false negative test result. Accuracy reviews showed that this test is as accurate as the molecular DNA analysis tests.
  • The biochip method can be used to test a single sample for several conditions at the same time. In addition to diagnosing Alzheimer’s, the biochip test can also detect the risk of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and breast cancer.
“The test is a real breakthrough in the area of Alzheimer’s research”. – Dr Maria Zellner, the Medical University of Vienna
Dr Maria Zellner, from the Institute that confirmed the accuracy of the biochip test said, “the test is a real breakthrough in the area of Alzheimer’s research”. Early Alzheimer’s diagnosis is very important as it improves the management of the disease and it is also critical to the development of new pharmaceutical drugs for Alzheimer’s.
There is no cure for Alzheimer’s although there are a few drugs that can help to reduce the symptoms. There are several Alzheimer’s drugs that are currently undergoing clinical trials but they will only make it to the markets in the next decade or so. People with a family history of dementia will need to go for regular check-ups so that the disease can be detected at the onset. They should also eat healthy, exercise regularly, practice meditation or yoga, and do tasks such as puzzles to keep their mental faculties sharp.
